Our last event: The Micro Debt

For decades, Microcredit has been hailed as the best solution to eradicate poverty. Journalist Tom Heinemann takes a critical look at the loan system and its adverse effects in his investigative film "The Micro Debt". This controversial documentary for the first time casts a critical eye on the issue of microfinance and its benefits to the developing countries. It offers insight into why major charities like ActionAid are pulling out of microfinance initiatives and why alternative poverty reduction strategies are required. The documentary sparked a great deal of controversy when it was released in 2010 and led to an ongoing debate about microfinance as an industry and particularly the reputation of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

The documentary will be followed by an informal discussion, facilitated by postgraduate student Alexandra Young from the Global Development Academy. This will be an opportunity to discuss the validity of the documentary and offer views on both sides of the story.

Please follow the facebook link for more details. As usual, event £1 for non-members and free for members.
